Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare mould surfaces

1.1 Prepare mould surfaces in readiness for use

1.2 Perform temporary repairs of minor mould surface defects to enable use

1.3 Clean up equipment and work areas according to workplace procedures when surface preparation is completed

2. Apply mould release system

2.1 Select correct system for job according to system specifications for application

2.2 Apply system to mould surfaces according to manufacturer specifications

2.3 Perform tape-test of surface release system with selected tapes to ensure compatibility

3. Apply mask to mould

3.1 Select suitable masking tape from tape test results

3.2 Apply masking tape and other necessary materials to ensure mould readiness for production

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance.

  • Numeracy skills to measure materials.
  • Reading skills to interpret specifications.

Other foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.

Release 1. Unit code changed. Application changed. Elements and Performance Criteria changed. Range of Conditions removed. Assessment Requirements changed. Supersedes and is equivalent to PMBPREP201 Prepare moulds for composites production.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • correctly prepare moulds for composites production at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • principles of preparation of mould surfaces
  • production workplace sequences
  • types of mould release systems and appropriate application techniques for each
  • types of tape appropriate for testing and masking, and test criteria to guide selection
  • tools and equipment suitable for mould preparation, including applicators, cleaning tools, cutters and measuring devices
  • typical problems associated with mould surfaces, including:
  • mould damage or cracks on the mould
  • build-up on mould surface.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
